Just keep pivoting

Never be afraid to keep changing and evolving your idea as you receive feedback from customers and the marketplace in general. As a start-up this is probably one of the most critical aspects to becoming successful and one of your biggest advantages while you are still a relatively small agile company.

Some of the biggest companies in history only became or stayed successful because of their ability to pivot and adapt to the market so why should your start-up be any different?

Netflix, started in 1998 as a company that provided a physical DVD rental business (think Blockbuster). Unlike Blockbuster, in 1999 they added a subscription model to their service delivering rentals in the mail which became so successful that in 2007 they decided to focus solely on a SaaS streaming service, and we all know how that turned out.

Amazon started its life as an online physical book seller in 1995. In 2000 Amazon launched their Marketplace which dramatically increased both their selection and revenue. Later in 2006 they began their cloud computer offering that today leads the industry.

These is just a few small examples of some of the many successful companies who listened to their customers and pivoted accordingly. As your start-up grows it’s easy to forget who determines the success or failure of your idea (it’s the paying customer in case you were wondering), so make sure you put good feedback processes into your business so that you can listen, learn and adapt, and this will increase your chance of success a hundred-fold.
